The exhibition of Frida Kahlo at the Mudec, Milan

This 2018 opens with an exceptional event in Milan: The exhibition of Frida Kahlo at the Mudec, located in via Tortona 56, “Oltre il mito”, from the 1st of February to the 3rd of June.
For the first time in Italy it will be possible to admire some of the artworks coming from two of the main collections of the artist: the one of the Museum Dolores Olmedo, with suffered and heartfelt major works, and the one belonging to Jacques and Natasha Gelman, with the more personal self-portraits.
So who is Frida?

Frida, nonconformist woman, rebel and politically engaged, was born in Mexico City in 1907, even if she preferred to say she was born in 1910, year of the Mexican revolution. Even if raised in a wealthy family, she didn’t have an easy life when she was a kid, due to her pathology of spina bifida and the tragic bus accident in 1925, where she broke most of her bones, ending up blocked in bed for a long time. Nevertheless, exactly because of this accident, Frida explored her artistic talent, dedicating her existence to painting, starting in particular with her self-portraits, since her image was the only thing she could actually really see.
Once recovered form the accident, Frida decided to show her works to the painting genius, Diego Rivera, that became first her mentor, and then also her husband, starting her effective artistic presence on the national scene. Theirs was a troubled love, defining profoundly Frida’s artistic life, due to the betrayals on both sides. Despite all the difficulties, Frida managed to live her life to its fullest, establishing herself also on the political scene, becoming a great heroine of the Mexican history. The artist died at 47, after confirming herself on the global scene, but her fame didn’t stop growing, keeping on rising after her death.

The goal of this exhibition is to introduce people to Frida Kahlo, beyond the classical stereotypes of the Mexican artist and her ailing and mysterious life. Thanks to a new finding in 2006, from her secret archive in her museum house, Casa Azul, the poetics of the artist is revealed. Frida is not only woman and not only Mexican, she is a forward-thinker, anticipating themes, attitudes and the behaviour of contemporary artists, gaining a foothold in the most influential artists panorama of the ‘900.

In the Milanese exhibition there will be 100 artworks divided into sections by theme: Politics, Woman, Violence, Nature and Death. Thus not a chronological perspective but a thematic one. Between the masterpieces of this exhibition, the renowned self-portraits, and the paintings of her garden, subject loved by Frida in her still lives.

In the last hospitalization part of her life, the painter expressly requested to be moved in the room with the best view in the house. She wanted to see her garden, place of inspiration and wellness, a charming world where to think about her work, relax or stay with friends.

Here at hotel Sanpi Milano we are particularly close to Frida and to this exhibition, since we share with her the love for plants and flowers that we grow in our porch and inner garden, our small green oasis. But not only: our love for art and the theme of still lives is visible also with the paintings exposed in our hotel, works from the famous artist Ercole Pignatelli.

We are convinced that there is no better reason than Frida Khalo’s exhibition at the Mudec to come and visit Milan in 2018, and the Hotel Sanpi Milano will be happy to assist its guests with the tickets’ booking reservation and with any useful tip to get to the museum, taking the green tube M2, only 9 minutes by foot from the hotel.
It’s time to start planning your trip to come and see Frida’s marvels!
